The stitch recipes
The guide maps 13 working regions with local stitch direction, strand count and DMC colour recipes. Use the region key and recommended sequence to follow the overlaps and changes in shading. Mapped techniques include curved long-and-short, tiny satin and split, split and short toe fill.
Does the dark hollow require cutting the fabric?
No. The cavity is a shaded thread field on intact cloth. Its dark centre and irregular rim create the appearance of depth without a cut opening.

Woodpecker Across the Hollow Scar explores the meeting of feather and timber. Build the flat shaded hollow and its rim, then place the bird over the trunk, preserving the staggered grips and restrained red markings.
