The Woodland Undersong gathers the forms usually seen close to the ground: unfurling ferns, joined moss cushions, lifted lichen edges, fungal brackets, fallen leaves and the grain of weathered wood. It is a two-volume digital botanical embroidery book with 80 paired studies across 208 pages.

Each subject appears as an A drawing followed by a B embroidery interpretation. Move between the two to see how an outline becomes a surface, how a turned edge changes colour, and how thread direction can help a leaf, root or piece of bark remain readable.

What Is Included

  • Volume I: Fronds and Hidden Forms, Studies 01 to 40, 104-page PDF.
  • Volume II: Wood and Fallen Things, Studies 41 to 80, 104-page PDF.
  • 80 A drawings and 80 B embroidery interpretations, 160 full-page artwork plates.
  • Ten English essays, prefaces, guidance on using the studies, colour and surface notes, closing texts, contents pages, study finders and alphabetical subject indexes.
  • Two English-language PDFs in US Letter portrait format, 8.5 x 11 inches.

Fronds and Hidden Forms

The first volume begins with fern crowns, broad blades and divided fronds. It continues through mosses, liverworts and lichens, woodland flowers and leaves, then roots, rhizomes, bulbs, tubers and young shoots. Its four chapters focus on growth, branching routes, folded surfaces and attachment.

Wood and Fallen Things

The second volume studies fungal forms, fallen leaves, nuts and seeds, bark, wood and surface contact. Its final ten studies bring several materials into larger woodland-floor compositions while keeping their outlines, supports and differences in scale visible.

From Drawing to Textile Surface

Begin with A to follow the main axis and the spaces between forms. Turn to B to consider the direction of visible thread, changes in value, and the difference between a smooth nut face, a raised moss bed and a lifted bark edge. The chapter essays refer to actual study numbers so you can compare the discussion with the plates.

Use the collection for personal botanical drawing, embroidery inspiration, textile-surface research, colour sampling and developing your own compositions. The studies have varied visual scales; they do not share a fixed finished project size.

Detailed roots, moss and overlapping surfaces may need to be simplified for clean stitching. Custom digitizing is quoted and purchased separately.
