The Botanical Thread is a two-volume digital botanical embroidery study collection built around observation, drawing and realistic textile interpretation.
The complete collection contains 80 original botanical Studies and 160 coordinated A/B reference plates. Each Study begins with a carefully structured botanical drawing and is followed by a realistic hand-embroidered interpretation of the same composition.
Rather than treating plants as generic decorative flowers, the collection studies individual botanical architecture: stems, branches, leaf planes, buds, flower centers, fruit, seed structures, overlaps and negative space.

From Botanical Drawing to Embroidered Surface
The A drawing establishes botanical count, silhouette, attachment, overlap, proportion and open space. The B plate then rebuilds the same structure in visible cotton strands, controlled stitch fields, realistic layering and shallow textile relief.
The paired format makes it possible to study how line becomes thread while preserving the identity of each plant.
Volume I: Studies 081-120
Volume I moves through meadow plants, garden flowers, climbing structures, woody branches and contrasting botanical pairings. Subjects include passionflower, oak and blackberry, tree peony and maple, fritillary, redcurrant and hazel, gloriosa and ginkgo, cotton and sesame, hosta and crocosmia, tea camellia, orchids, allium, cyclamen, tulips and many more.
Volume II: Studies 121-160
Volume II expands the library into richer botanical portraits, fruiting structures, seed forms, strong foliage and more layered compositions. Subjects include anthurium, delphinium, fig, ranunculus, heliconia, magnolia, freesia, castor, water lilies, honeysuckle, iris, camellia, maple samaras, squash, agapanthus, beech, lupin, caper, persimmon, astrantia and toad lilies.
Designed for Botanical Embroidery Study
The collection focuses on botanical proportion, flower architecture, leaf direction, branch rhythm, fruit weight, overlap order, negative space, color relationships and realistic hand-embroidery surface behavior.
The embroidered plates intentionally retain visible thread paths rather than smooth painted effects. Fine structures remain anchored, broad surfaces are developed through directional stitch fields and the linen is allowed to remain visible where the composition requires space.
How to Use the Collection
Use the A drawings for composition study, tracing, placement and embroidery planning. Use the B plates to study thread direction, density, color relationships, layering and possible hand-embroidered interpretations.
The Studies can inspire framed botanical needlework, textile panels, cushions, linen projects, garments, samplers and other personal embroidery projects.
