A front bark rim hides the tawny owl's lower body inside the beech hollow. Download the embroidery pattern for rounded facial discs, hanging leaves and two unequal shelf fungi, keeping the owl's face sheltered within the recess.

From outlines to shaded surfaces

The guide maps 12 working regions with local stitch direction, strand count and DMC colour recipes. Use the region key and recommended sequence to follow the overlaps and changes in shading. Mapped techniques include divided turning long-and-short, turning long-and-short, tiered long-and-short.

Scale and fabric planning

Artwork canvas: 232 x 300 mm, portrait, including the open background areas. Print the separate A3 transfer at Actual Size / 100% and check the 50 mm control bar. Guide previews are reduced. These are canvas dimensions, not a finished hoop, cushion or bag size. The Stitch Guide itself uses US Letter pages.

Choosing the ground fabric

Suggested fabric: deep teal linen. The palette proposes 12 DMC shades for stranded cotton. Supply your own needles, hoop or frame and a transfer method suitable for the cloth. Test the transfer and physical thread colours on a small swatch first.

Should feet be added below the owl's face?

The front bark rim conceals the lower anatomy in the supplied design. Work that overlap as shown rather than inventing visible feet beneath the hollow.

The design on cloth

Tawny Owl Inside the Beech Hollow focuses on what the opening reveals. Build the recess and bark arch, keep the two eyes within their unequal facial discs, and use the leaves and shelf fungi to vary the outer texture.
