Head-first movement sets this nuthatch apart from a conventional perched bird. Download the hand embroidery pattern to place the pale breast against birch grain, three peeling flaps and two separate lichen colonies.

Feathers, contours and small details

The guide maps 12 working regions with local stitch direction, strand count and DMC colour recipes. Use the region key and recommended sequence to follow the overlaps and changes in shading. Mapped techniques include split and broken straight, curved long-and-short, directional long-and-short.

Does the pattern include the peeling bark detail?

Yes. Three bark flaps and two lichen colonies are included as distinct areas alongside the bird, with the trunk providing the main vertical structure.

Bird and setting

Nuthatch Descending the Silver Bark turns the usual upright bird composition on its head. Follow the descending body beside the silver trunk, using changes in stitch direction to distinguish the bird from the peeling bark.
