Nordic botanical drawing meets embroidered textile interpretation

Nordic Florals, Geometric Lines and Minimal Textile Motifs Studies is a two-volume digital visual collection exploring the relationship between botanical drawing, geometric structure, textile surface and embroidered interpretation.

Each of the 80 studies is presented twice: first as an original drawing, then as its embroidered textile counterpart. Together, the collection contains 80 drawings and 80 embroidered interpretations, allowing the transition from line to thread to remain visible throughout the book.

Rather than treating embroidery as a decorative layer added to an illustration, the studies examine how composition changes once it enters cloth: how a line gains weight, how negative space becomes part of the textile surface, how colour reacts to different linen grounds, and how botanical forms can develop into borders, grids, stars, wreaths, placement motifs and complete textile gardens.

The result is a slow visual reference for embroidery lovers, textile artists, surface designers and makers interested in botanical composition, Nordic restraint, geometric rhythm and the material character of thread.

Volume I — Studies 01–40

Meadow, Structure & Nordic Ornament

Volume I establishes the visual language of the collection.

The sequence begins with quiet meadow botanicals and isolated plant studies before moving into paired wildflower compositions, geometric stem systems, seedheads, berries, repeated structures and applied Nordic ornament.

The five sections are:

  • Quiet Meadow Botanicals
  • Paired Wildflower Dialogues
  • Geometric Stem Rhythms
  • Seedheads, Berries and Field Structures
  • Nordic Borders, Bands and Corners

The emphasis is on spacing, directional movement and restraint. Open fields are treated as part of the composition rather than as areas waiting to be filled, while increasingly structured studies show how botanical material can become repeat, border, corner and frame.

Volume II — Studies 41–80

Winter Geometry, Placement & Complete Textile Gardens

Volume II expands the same visual system into more complex textile situations.

Wreaths and garlands begin to organize the page through curved framing. Pine, berries, frost and darker grounds introduce a stronger winter atmosphere. Botanical forms then move toward snowflower geometry, Nordic stars, medallions and lattices before being tested as collar, cuff, pocket, runner, napkin and yoke placements.

The final studies gather these ideas into complete editorial compositions.

The five sections are:

  • Wreaths, Garlands and Framing Forms
  • Pine, Berry and Winter Meadow Motifs
  • Snowflower and Nordic Star Geometry
  • Linen Placement and Editorial Reserve Studies
  • Complete Minimal Garden Compositions

Volume II is denser and more textile-led, but the same principle remains throughout: every motif must retain enough space to remain legible.

From Drawing to Thread

The paired format is central to the book.

The A pages establish contour, proportion, direction, rhythm, hierarchy and negative space.

The B pages explore what happens when those decisions are translated into cloth through thread density, relief, colour, stitch direction and visible textile weave.

Pale ivory, natural grey, flax, smoke-blue, muted olive and deep indigo grounds create different material atmospheres, while botanical forms move between delicate line work and more sculptural embroidered relief.

Drawing and embroidery are therefore presented as equal parts of one visual study rather than as simple “before” and “after” versions.
