A full descending tail gives the long-tailed tit a reach beyond the willow loop. This PDF embroidery pattern keeps three catkins above it and four leaves hanging through the surrounding space.

The stitch recipes

The guide maps 14 working regions with local stitch direction, strand count and DMC colour recipes. Use the region key and recommended sequence to follow the overlaps and changes in shading. Mapped techniques include stem and selective couching, two-sided long-and-short, curved long-and-short.

Before tracing the pattern

  • 232 x 300 mm portrait artwork canvas, including open background
  • A3 transfer PDF: print at Actual Size / 100% and verify the 50 mm control bar
  • The Stitch Guide has US Letter pages; its previews are reduced
  • Canvas measurements do not specify the size of a finished object

What the download contains

  • 16-page design-specific Stitch Guide PDF with region key, DMC palette and recommended sequence
  • Full-size A3 transfer PDF and matching SVG
  • White and transparent 600 dpi linework PNGs
  • Colour reference JPG and thread-and-region recipe CSV
  • Hand Embroidery Stitch Sampler, Essential Needlework Handbook PDF
  • READ_ME instructions

Will the tail fit inside the willow loop?

The full tail extends beyond the loop. Include that lower reach when placing the transfer, rather than sizing the project around the leafy arch alone.

Linen and colour planning

Suggested fabric: dark slate-blue linen. The palette proposes 14 DMC shades for stranded cotton. Supply your own needles, hoop or frame and a transfer method suitable for the cloth. Test the transfer and physical thread colours on a small swatch first.

A closer look at the motif

Long Tailed Tit in the Willow Loop is organised around a continuous branch and a remarkably long silhouette. Keep the tail complete, let each catkin retain its own angle, and use the open ground to separate the delicate forms.
