There is a lifted foot to notice before the chaffinch settles on the mossed brick. The downloadable hand embroidery pattern lets angular masonry, rounded plumage and small green patches sit together without merging their textures.
From outlines to shaded surfaces
The guide maps 13 working regions with local stitch direction, strand count and DMC colour recipes. Use the region key and recommended sequence to follow the overlaps and changes in shading. Mapped techniques include stem and directional fill, stem and lobe-specific fill, curved long-and-short.
Scale and fabric planning
Artwork canvas: 232 x 300 mm, portrait, including the open background areas. Print the separate A3 transfer at Actual Size / 100% and check the 50 mm control bar. Guide previews are reduced. These are canvas dimensions, not a finished hoop, cushion or bag size. The Stitch Guide itself uses US Letter pages.
What is the bird standing on?
Broken brick provides the footing. Its angular faces and separate moss patches are part of the design, not a plain branch or an added display prop.
Choosing the ground fabric
- Suggested ground: warm mushroom linen
- 21 suggested DMC shades, using stranded cotton floss
- Bring your own needles and a hoop or frame
- Test the chosen transfer method and thread colours on your cloth
The design on cloth
Chaffinch Above the Mossed Brick looks closely at an ordinary garden perch. Translate the broken brick into shaded cotton planes, keep moss marks low, and preserve the clear gap beneath the bird's raised foot.
