The bittern holds its neck upright within the reed veil, with the bill raised. The downloadable embroidery pattern works through streaked feathers and crossing blades, keeping a large drooping panicle beside the straighter supports.

Cloth and thread choices

Suggested fabric: dark muted green linen. The palette proposes 11 DMC shades for stranded cotton. Supply your own needles, hoop or frame and a transfer method suitable for the cloth. Test the transfer and physical thread colours on a small swatch first.

Files supplied

The package contains the 16-page Stitch Guide PDF, a full-size A3 transfer PDF, SVG linework, white and transparent 600 dpi linework PNGs, a colour reference JPG, the thread-and-region CSV, READ_ME instructions and the Hand Embroidery Stitch Sampler, Essential Needlework Handbook PDF.

The scene in detail

Bittern Behind the Ochre Reed Veil works with a bird whose form is closely tied to its surroundings. Separate neck streaks from reed grain through stitch direction, then preserve the small water contacts beneath the body.

Canvas dimensions and printing

  • 232 x 300 mm portrait artwork canvas, including open background
  • A3 transfer PDF: print at Actual Size / 100% and verify the 50 mm control bar
  • The Stitch Guide has US Letter pages; its previews are reduced
  • Canvas measurements do not specify the size of a finished object

What stops the bittern from merging into the reeds?

The neck has its own shaded direction beside the straighter stems. Foreground blade crossings and the single branching panicle give the surrounding reeds different levels of detail.

Stitch direction and shading

The guide maps 12 working regions with local stitch direction, strand count and DMC colour recipes. Use the region key and recommended sequence to follow the overlaps and changes in shading. Mapped techniques include split and narrow shaded fill, low short fill and split, tiny satin and narrow shaded fill.
