The quail stays close to the soil under a hanging millet canopy. Download the hand embroidery pattern for the two grain heads, short tail, walking toe contacts and loose seeds around the cut stubble.

Scale and fabric planning

Artwork canvas: 300 x 232 mm, landscape, including the open background areas. Print the separate A3 transfer at Actual Size / 100% and check the 50 mm control bar. Guide previews are reduced. These are canvas dimensions, not a finished hoop, cushion or bag size. The Stitch Guide itself uses US Letter pages.

The design on cloth

Quail Beneath the Millet Canopy looks at the field from close to the soil. Build the millet supports and hanging seed heads first, then work the small walking bird through warm shading, facial markings and distinct ground contacts.

Choosing the ground fabric

  • Suggested ground: sage-grey linen
  • 13 suggested DMC shades, using stranded cotton floss
  • Bring your own needles and a hoop or frame
  • Test the chosen transfer method and thread colours on your cloth

From outlines to shaded surfaces

The guide maps 12 working regions with local stitch direction, strand count and DMC colour recipes. Use the region key and recommended sequence to follow the overlaps and changes in shading. Mapped techniques include broken stem and split, tiny satin and seed stitch, curved long-and-short.

Does this design show the quail perched on a branch?

It is a walking, ground-level scene. Unequal toe contacts, the short tail, stubble and separate grain ovals establish the bird's relationship to the lower setting.
