The lotus pads help explain the jacana's unusually long toes. This PDF hand embroidery pattern places them over two torn leaves beside one seedpod, with folded upright foliage and open water nearby.
Choosing the ground fabric
Suggested fabric: deep plum linen. The palette proposes 13 DMC shades for stranded cotton. Supply your own needles, hoop or frame and a transfer method suitable for the cloth. Test the transfer and physical thread colours on a small swatch first.
From outlines to shaded surfaces
The guide maps 12 working regions with local stitch direction, strand count and DMC colour recipes. Use the region key and recommended sequence to follow the overlaps and changes in shading. Mapped techniques include split and blade fill, curved long-and-short, tiny satin and split.
Scale and fabric planning
Artwork canvas: 300 x 232 mm, landscape, including the open background areas. Print the separate A3 transfer at Actual Size / 100% and check the 50 mm control bar. Guide previews are reduced. These are canvas dimensions, not a finished hoop, cushion or bag size. The Stitch Guide itself uses US Letter pages.
Do the torn lotus areas need to be cut out?
The openings reveal intact ground between the stitched leaf shapes. Keep the torn boundaries in the transfer and work the surrounding leaf tissue without cutting the fabric.
The design on cloth
Jacana on the Torn Lotus Map gives feet and foliage equal attention. Follow every visible toe to its own pad, retain the leaf openings as exposed cloth, and shape the central seedpod without closing the surrounding water reserves.
