A goldfinch's open wings stretch across two teasel crowns of different sizes. The downloadable hand embroidery pattern uses the red face and yellow bands as small colour changes within the wider flight.

From outlines to shaded surfaces

The guide maps 14 working regions with local stitch direction, strand count and DMC colour recipes. Use the region key and recommended sequence to follow the overlaps and changes in shading. Mapped techniques include stem, couching, lobe-specific long-and-short.

The design on cloth

Goldfinch Across the Teasel Crown pairs airborne movement with the dry structure of a seed head. Follow each wing's own direction, keeping the yellow markings within the feather groups, before settling into the smaller detached-chain units of the teasels.

Choosing the ground fabric

Suggested fabric: deep muted plum linen. The palette proposes 16 DMC shades for stranded cotton. Supply your own needles, hoop or frame and a transfer method suitable for the cloth. Test the transfer and physical thread colours on a small swatch first.

Are the two teasel heads identical?

One is larger than the other. Their uneven spacing gives the spread wings room and keeps the surrounding seed heads from forming a mirrored frame.
