An open pinecone gives the crossbill's crossed bill tips a purpose in the scene. The digital embroidery pattern includes a second closed cone, four pine fans and feet gripping the larger cone above the descending tail.
The stitch recipes
The guide maps 12 working regions with local stitch direction, strand count and DMC colour recipes. Use the region key and recommended sequence to follow the overlaps and changes in shading. Mapped techniques include fine split, turning long-and-short, tiered long-and-short.
Should the crossed bill tips be straightened?
No. They are the bird's defining feature in this feeding pose. Keep the deliberate crossing and its contact with the open cone when following the transfer.
Before tracing the pattern
Artwork canvas: 232 x 300 mm, portrait, including the open background areas. Print the separate A3 transfer at Actual Size / 100% and check the 50 mm control bar. Guide previews are reduced. These are canvas dimensions, not a finished hoop, cushion or bag size. The Stitch Guide itself uses US Letter pages.
A closer look at the motif
Crossbill in the Open Cone Mechanism is a close study of bird and seed structure. Build the cone recesses before the scales, retain the crossed bill tips, and let the four pine fans frame the long feather silhouette.
Linen and colour planning
Suggested fabric: midnight-blue linen. The palette proposes 20 DMC shades for stranded cotton. Supply your own needles, hoop or frame and a transfer method suitable for the cloth. Test the transfer and physical thread colours on a small swatch first.
