Look through the fern arch and the wren is already standing on its mossed support. In this PDF embroidery pattern, the curled fiddlehead and cocked tail give the enclosed scene two different upward turns.
Stitch direction and shading
The guide maps 14 working regions with local stitch direction, strand count and DMC colour recipes. Use the region key and recommended sequence to follow the overlaps and changes in shading. Mapped techniques include stem, fine couching, broken parallel stem runs.

The scene in detail
Wren Inside the Fern Gate offers a quiet woodland scene built from small changes in direction. The short tail rises into the arch, the brow stays light, and the fern leaflets leave enough exposed cloth for the bird's silhouette to read clearly.
Cloth and thread choices
- Suggested ground: muted slate-blue linen
- 14 suggested DMC shades, using stranded cotton floss
- Bring your own needles and a hoop or frame
- Test the chosen transfer method and thread colours on your cloth
Canvas dimensions and printing
Artwork canvas: 232 x 300 mm, portrait, including the open background areas. Print the separate A3 transfer at Actual Size / 100% and check the 50 mm control bar. Guide previews are reduced. These are canvas dimensions, not a finished hoop, cushion or bag size. The Stitch Guide itself uses US Letter pages.
Does the fern arch form a solid border?
The arch remains open. Paired leaflets, the curled fiddlehead and the mossed support build the setting without filling the entire area around the wren.
