Two foam territories move past a sanderling on the shore. Download the embroidery pattern for pale mottled plumage, a lifted foot and four shell shapes, keeping the open cells within the foam visible.
Cloth and thread choices
- Suggested ground: muted grey-green linen
- 15 suggested DMC shades, using stranded cotton floss
- Bring your own needles and a hoop or frame
- Test the chosen transfer method and thread colours on your cloth
Should the spaces inside the foam be filled white?
Open cloth cells are part of the foam structure. Keep the two territories distinct and follow their low marks instead of turning the waves into continuous white bands.
Stitch direction and shading
The guide maps 12 working regions with local stitch direction, strand count and DMC colour recipes. Use the region key and recommended sequence to follow the overlaps and changes in shading. Mapped techniques include secured curved split and low short fill, curved long-and-short, tiny satin and fine split.
Canvas dimensions and printing
Artwork canvas: 300 x 232 mm, landscape, including the open background areas. Print the separate A3 transfer at Actual Size / 100% and check the 50 mm control bar. Guide previews are reduced. These are canvas dimensions, not a finished hoop, cushion or bag size. The Stitch Guide itself uses US Letter pages.
The scene in detail
Sanderling Before the Returning Foam is a close view of the meeting of shore and water. Keep the shell forms separate, use low secured marks for foam, and give the walking pose a clear grounded foot and raised step.
