The quetzal's two tail ends cross below the orchids instead of stopping at the perch. This digital embroidery pattern includes broad petals, violet lips and fine hanging roots around the longer feather lines.

A closer look at the motif

Quetzal Through the Orchid Arch brings generous tail length into a dense botanical setting. Keep every visible tail end separate, follow the flower overlaps, and work the fine roots as secured curves that leave cloth between them.

Before tracing the pattern

Artwork canvas: 232 x 300 mm, portrait, including the open background areas. Print the separate A3 transfer at Actual Size / 100% and check the 50 mm control bar. Guide previews are reduced. These are canvas dimensions, not a finished hoop, cushion or bag size. The Stitch Guide itself uses US Letter pages.

Linen and colour planning

Suggested fabric: deep burgundy-plum linen. The palette proposes 21 DMC shades for stranded cotton. Supply your own needles, hoop or frame and a transfer method suitable for the cloth. Test the transfer and physical thread colours on a small swatch first.

Can the long tail be shortened to fit a smaller project?

The supplied composition includes both full tail ends. Check the canvas and transfer before choosing the fabric, since shortening those lines changes the design's main reach.

The stitch recipes

The guide maps 12 working regions with local stitch direction, strand count and DMC colour recipes. Use the region key and recommended sequence to follow the overlaps and changes in shading. Mapped techniques include split axes, turning long-and-short, split edging.
