The kingfisher's long bill points toward a ripple below the reed window. Its PDF hand embroidery pattern turns blue and orange feather fields through the dive, leaving low water and a folded blade around the descent.

Placing the full design

  • 232 x 300 mm portrait artwork canvas, including open background
  • A3 transfer PDF: print at Actual Size / 100% and verify the 50 mm control bar
  • The Stitch Guide has US Letter pages; its previews are reduced
  • Canvas measurements do not specify the size of a finished object

Materials to prepare

Suggested fabric: terracotta linen. The palette proposes 23 DMC shades for stranded cotton. Supply your own needles, hoop or frame and a transfer method suitable for the cloth. Test the transfer and physical thread colours on a small swatch first.

Feathers, contours and small details

The guide maps 12 working regions with local stitch direction, strand count and DMC colour recipes. Use the region key and recommended sequence to follow the overlaps and changes in shading. Mapped techniques include split and broken shaded fill, fine curved split, curved long-and-short.

Where does the kingfisher's beak point?

The long bill leads down and to the right toward the small ripple. Keep that endpoint when positioning the transfer so the feeding movement remains complete.

Bird and setting

Kingfisher Through the Reed Window captures the approach to water rather than a perched portrait. Shape the unequal wings and long beak carefully, then use restrained horizontal reflections to hold the quieter lower part of the scene.
