The design on cloth
Green Woodpecker in the Ant Meadow brings the bird close to its food source. The broad green feather fields establish the body, while five individual ants and the descending beak supply the scene's smallest, most precise details.
From outlines to shaded surfaces
The guide maps 14 working regions with local stitch direction, strand count and DMC colour recipes. Use the region key and recommended sequence to follow the overlaps and changes in shading. Mapped techniques include stem, straight and fine couching, broken stem and short fill, tiny satin and split.
Will the ants disappear into the ground texture?
Their small marks are mapped separately from the mound. Keeping those areas distinct helps the feeding action read without adding more ants or heavier ground fill.
Choosing the ground fabric
Suggested fabric: muted slate-blue linen. The palette proposes 18 DMC shades for stranded cotton. Supply your own needles, hoop or frame and a transfer method suitable for the cloth. Test the transfer and physical thread colours on a small swatch first.
Scale and fabric planning
Artwork canvas: 300 x 232 mm, landscape, including the open background areas. Print the separate A3 transfer at Actual Size / 100% and check the 50 mm control bar. Guide previews are reduced. These are canvas dimensions, not a finished hoop, cushion or bag size. The Stitch Guide itself uses US Letter pages.
