Thistle spokes and soft feather markings meet around a perched corn bunting. Its PDF hand embroidery pattern includes two unequal heads, three thorned leaves and the small crossed-toe detail on the support.

Do the thorns need raised or sharp materials?

The pattern uses low cotton marks for the thorns and head spokes. Their pointed appearance comes from the stitched shapes, not from rigid additions to the fabric.

Choosing the ground fabric

Suggested fabric: muted plum linen. The palette proposes 14 DMC shades for stranded cotton. Supply your own needles, hoop or frame and a transfer method suitable for the cloth. Test the transfer and physical thread colours on a small swatch first.

The design on cloth

Corn Bunting at the Thistle Compass is a study in contrasting edges. Build the angular thistle structure around a rounded bird, using compact seed-head units and fine thorn strokes to keep the surrounding texture readable.

From outlines to shaded surfaces

The guide maps 12 working regions with local stitch direction, strand count and DMC colour recipes. Use the region key and recommended sequence to follow the overlaps and changes in shading. Mapped techniques include fine split and couching, curved long-and-short, tiny satin and split.
