The avocet's narrow upcurved bill contrasts with its broader black-and-white wing areas. Download the embroidery pattern for the stepping pose, golden seed branches and three broken reed strips across the lower setting.
Linen and colour planning
Suggested fabric: dusty terracotta linen. The palette proposes 15 DMC shades for stranded cotton. Supply your own needles, hoop or frame and a transfer method suitable for the cloth. Test the transfer and physical thread colours on a small swatch first.
The stitch recipes
The guide maps 12 working regions with local stitch direction, strand count and DMC colour recipes. Use the region key and recommended sequence to follow the overlaps and changes in shading. Mapped techniques include curved long-and-short, tiny satin and fine split, split and short toe fill.
A closer look at the motif
Avocet Across the Blackwater Line relies on a few distinctive shapes: the upturned bill, a lifted foot and separated dark wing fields. Keep those contours clean before adding the smaller reed and seed details along the shore.
Are both avocet legs planted in the water?
One leg stands in the water and the other bends into a step. Their different positions keep the lower pose from becoming a pair of matching vertical lines.
Before tracing the pattern
Artwork canvas: 300 x 232 mm, landscape, including the open background areas. Print the separate A3 transfer at Actual Size / 100% and check the 50 mm control bar. Guide previews are reduced. These are canvas dimensions, not a finished hoop, cushion or bag size. The Stitch Guide itself uses US Letter pages.
